If the thought of having your professional headshot taken makes you uncomfortable, you are not alone.
I hear it all the time from professionals who come to me for a new headshot. They are confident in their careers, comfortable speaking with clients, leading meetings, or presenting in front of a room, but put a camera in front of them, and suddenly they are not sure what to do with their hands, how to stand, or what expression to make.
I understand why.
Being photographed can feel surprisingly vulnerable, especially when you know the finished image may appear on your LinkedIn profile, company website, professional bio, or marketing materials.
As a professional photographer, I want the experience to feel very different from simply standing in front of a camera and being told to smile. My approach to professional women’s headshots is centered around guidance, conversation, and creating an environment where you can relax and feel like yourself.
My goal is to help you move from feeling camera-shy to feeling confident in front of the lens.
You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose
One of the biggest concerns I hear from clients is, “I don’t know how to pose.”
That’s completely fine.
You don’t need to know.
I give you clear direction throughout the session, from how to position your shoulders and hands to where to look and how to adjust your posture. I make small changes as we go rather than expecting you to figure everything out on your own.
Instead of saying, “Just be natural,” and leaving you wondering what that means, I give you something specific to do.
That makes a huge difference.
Once you know what to do, you can stop thinking about whether you look awkward and start settling into the session.
I Start by Getting to Know You
Before I start taking photographs, I want to understand what you need from your session.
Are you updating your LinkedIn profile? Do you need a new photograph for your company website? Are you building a personal brand? Are you looking for a professional portrait that feels more approachable, confident, or polished?
These details help me understand the type of photographs we should create together.
I also want to know how you want to feel when you look at your images.
Some clients want a strong, confident business portrait. Others want something warm and approachable. There is no single correct way to look professional, and I don’t want to force you into a generic style that doesn’t feel like you.

Sometimes the Best Way to Relax Is to Stop Thinking About the Camera
I don’t believe every client needs to spend the entire session staring directly into a lens.
Conversation is an important part of my process.
I talk with you throughout the session, ask questions, make observations, and use humor when it feels right. This helps shift your attention away from the fact that you are being photographed.
And often, that is when I see the biggest change.
Your shoulders relax. Your expression becomes more natural. You stop thinking about what your face is doing.
You are simply having a conversation with me.
Those are often the moments when I can capture photographs that feel much more like you.
I Don’t Expect You to Get It Right on the First Try
Another thing I want my clients to know is that there is no pressure to get the perfect photograph immediately.
A headshot session is a process.
I may make a small adjustment to your posture, ask you to move your chin slightly, change your expression, or try a different angle. We look at what is working and make adjustments as we go.
If something feels uncomfortable, tell me.
If you don’t like a particular expression, tell me.
If you have a side of your face or a particular feature you prefer, I want to know.
The more communication we have during the session, the better I can tailor the experience to you.
I Help You Find Expressions That Feel Natural

A professional headshot does not have to mean a big smile.
Depending on your profession, personality, and goals, your ideal expression might be warm and friendly, confident and composed, approachable, thoughtful, or somewhere in between.
I pay attention to those small changes in expression throughout the session.
Rather than asking you to hold one expression for an extended period, I keep things moving. This gives me opportunities to capture different looks and allows you to relax between photographs.
My goal is not to make you look like a model.
My goal is to create a photograph that looks like you on your best day.
Your Comfort Changes the Final Photograph
When someone feels uncomfortable, it often shows.
You may see tension in the shoulders, a forced smile, a stiff posture, or an expression that doesn’t quite feel like you.
That is why creating a comfortable environment isn’t just about making the session more pleasant. It is an important part of creating better photographs.
When you feel relaxed, I have more opportunities to capture genuine expressions and natural body language.
The technical side of photography matters, of course. Lighting, composition, camera settings, and posing all play a role. But I also believe the relationship between photographer and client matters tremendously.
You have to trust the person behind the camera.
You Don’t Have to Be “Photogenic”
I have heard clients say, “I’m just not photogenic.”
I don’t believe being photogenic is something you either have or don’t have.
Most people simply aren’t accustomed to being professionally photographed.
You may not know what angles work for you. You may not know how to position your body. You may become self-conscious when someone points a camera at you.
That doesn’t mean you cannot have photographs you love.
It means you need someone who knows how to guide you.
That’s one of the most important parts of my role as a headshot photographer.
From Nervous to “That Wasn’t So Bad”
One of my favorite moments during a session is when a client realizes the experience isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as they expected.
At the beginning, they may be nervous and unsure.
A little later, we’re talking, laughing, adjusting poses, and looking at photographs together.
By the end, I often hear some version of:
“That was actually fun.”
That’s exactly what I want.
You shouldn’t have to dread getting a professional headshot.
You should be able to walk into my studio knowing that I will guide you through the process, listen to what you need, and help you feel comfortable along the way.
Your Headshot Should Still Feel Like You
The goal of a professional headshot isn’t to turn you into someone you’re not.
I want to create photographs that show your professionalism while still allowing your personality to come through.
Whether you want to look confident and polished for LinkedIn, approachable for your business website, or more personal for your brand, I can help you create images around the way you want to present yourself.
And you don’t have to figure it all out before you arrive.
We can talk about your goals, your wardrobe, your preferred style, and how you want your photographs to look. From there, I’ll guide you through the session.
Ready to Feel More Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
If you’ve been putting off updating your professional headshot because you don’t enjoy being photographed, I understand.
You don’t have to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera. You don’t have to know how to pose. And you certainly don’t have to arrive knowing exactly what to do.
That’s where I come in.
I create relaxed, guided headshot sessions for women and professionals who want photographs that feel polished, confident, and authentic.
If you’re ready to take the next step, book your headshot session and let’s create photographs that you will feel confident sharing on LinkedIn, your website, and wherever your professional presence matters.
